What's going on - useful links
This works best with feedback - so let me know what's working, what's new and what's changed!
These are links for information rather than specific recommendations (although I do know and work with many of the people who provide services locally - and of course I am passionate about NCT!), so if you are considering using a product or service linked here, please make sure you've researched it to your own satisfaction.
NCT Classes and courses
Don't forget my Relax, Stretch and Breathe classes in Royston! Tuesday evenings at Coombes Community Centre.
There are other yoga classes for pregnant women in the area - see pregnancy section below.
Not far away in Cambridge, Hitchin and Letchworth, specialist workshops are held for those interested in a possible waterbirth (the next ones are 11th July 2015 and 12th September 2015) and for parents expecting twins (or more! Next workshop 4th September 2015), as well as short refresher courses for those expecting a second or subsequent baby who would like a chance to revisit labour and birth and prepare for life with a baby and an older child.
Other NCT events and activities
Our NCT Bumps and Babes group (NCT Royston postnatal group) meets on a Friday morning, usually 10.30-12.30 at the Old Bull Inn at the top of the High Street in Royston, for chat, support and lots of tea and biscuits! Mums-to-be are most welcome alongside parents of babies in their first year or so. The group is free and open to anyone (you don't have to be an NCT member), though a small donation towards refreshments is appreciated.
We now have a thriving local committee (whilst remaining part of Cambridge NCT Branch) organising activities and events, most of them free - see our facebook events feed for more details. You can subscribe to our events listing if you like, then facebook will notify you when new events are added.
Our first Royston NCT Nearly New Sale is on Saturday 17th September! If you'd like to help, sell or buy, email firstname.lastname@example.org for more details.
There are other NCT Bumps and Babes groups in Cambourne (Wednesday mornings) and Cambridge (Friday mornings), paediatric First Aid sessions in Biggleswade, and of course the massive Nearly New Sales in Cambridge, Hitchin, Biggleswade and Saffron Walden (and further afield).
I'd be really interested in what else you think NCT could do in Royston and the villages - so many possibilities! For example, I am considering setting up a sling library where new parents could try and borrow slings and babycarriers. What would you like to see?
Pregnancy in North Herts / South Cambs (and around)
Angela teaches pregnancy yoga on Thursday evenings at the Royston Complementary Health Centre -
Jane is one of our local hypnobirthing people - she teaches groups and individuals at the Royston Complementary Health Centre (and also in Baldock and Biggleswade) - http://www.breezebirthing.com/
You could also try Natal Hypnotherapy's CD programmes - find out more here - natal hypnotherapy practitioners run courses too but the nearest to us are further afield in Bishop's Stortford or St Albans.
Are you considering using a doula (professional birth supporter)? Cambridgeshire doulas is an umbrella organisation for many of the doulas working locally, and you can read a bit about them and make contact through the website.
Julia offers a range of services including pregnancy massage (...and relax...) and ante- and postnatal yoga - http://www.birthlight.co.uk/page/teacher-of-the-month-Julia-East
Various pregnancy wellbeing treatments such as massage and complementary therapies including reflexology and acupuncture can be accessed at Royston Complementary Health Centre just round the corner from the top of the High Street.
For new parents and babies
Ouch!... If you have just had a baby and you are feeling tender (and finding it hard to sit down -) due to bruising, tears or stitches, you could hire one of our valley cushions which can offer some relief. Exactly as they sound, they are a special cushion with airbags each side and the all-important 'valley' down the middle, so no pressure on sore bits. NCT has a network of volunteer hire agents, of which I am one - if you need one, email me or ring/text on 07870 624985. Cambridge or Herts North NCT branches can also put you in touch with breastfeeding support, breast pump hire agents and NCT bra fitters locally.
I also host the Baby Club at Stepping Stones Children's Centre in Bassingbourn. Do pop in for a tea or coffee and chat (and sometimes home-made cake...) on Monday mornings 10.00am-11.30am. Pregnant women also most welcome - and Baby Club runs alongside the midwife clinic, so you can drop by before or after your appointment. This is a free group which is open to anyone expecting a baby or with a new baby up to crawling/cruising age.
Our local children's centres in Royston, Bassingbourn and Melbourn offer a host of other activities for new parents with their babies, including breastfeeding support, baby massage courses, young parents groups, support for families with a disabled child, introducing solids workshops, a twins group and more. You can register to receive an e-newsletter to find out what's on or just turn up (check opening hours!)
Now running - Mother and Baby Yoga classes at Whaddon Village Hall near Royston. Suitable for mums with their babies aged from 6 weeks to crawling, these sessions offer gentle postnatal exercise for mums and calming massage and yoga techniques for babies. Monday afternoons 1.30-3.00pm - register your interest here! Classes will also be starting in Cambridge in 2017.
Cambridgeshire doulas (see pregnancy section) offer postnatal doula support in the early weeks.
